The exam is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes long and has two sections — multiple choice and free-response. Each section has two parts.  

The exam will be administered at a computer. On exam day, you will read text on the screen, listen through a headset, type using the keyboard, and speak into a microphone.

Section I: Multiple Choice | ~70 Questions | 1 hour and 20 minutes | 50% of Exam Score

  • Part A: Listening: 30 to 35 questions | 20 minutes
    • Interpretive Communication: Listening
  • Part B: Reading: 35 to 40 questions | 60 minutes  
    • Interpretive Communication: Reading


Section II: Free-response | 4 Tasks | 40 minutes | 50% of Exam Score

  • Part A: Writing: 2 sections | 30 minutes
    • Interpersonal Writing: Text-Chat (6 prompts; 10 minutes)
    • Presentational Writing: Compare and Contrast Article (1 prompt; 20 minutes)
  • Part B: Speaking: 2 sections | 10 minutes
    • Interpersonal Speaking: Conversation (4 prompts; 3 minutes)
    • Presentational Speaking: Cultural Perspective Presentation (1 prompt; 7 minutes)
